Global Connections is an organization that is committed to helping international students, scholars, and their spouses transition well to their lives in the US. It is run by Christian volunteers who desire to assist international students and scholars as they enter a new culture. We are all native English speakers and love to interact with people from all over the world. Some of us have traveled to many different countries and are sensitive to different cultures. We look forward to meeting new people from all over the world each time a new school term starts.
Culture Conversation and cuisine
These gatherings occur in American homes, are informal, and involve food and conversation about culture. This is not an ESL class, but it will be an opportunity for you to practice your English and share culture. The groups will meet once a month.
This program is designed for new students and visiting scholars who are looking for a little help as they wait for their dorm or apartment to become available.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN A CONVERSATION GROUP?
Groups are offered free to international students, scholars, and their spouses. All groups are run by volunteers who enjoy helping internationals.
WHERE DO THE CONVERSATION GROUPS MEET?
Groups meet in locations on campus or near campus. The exact location is determined by the group facilitator.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A CONVERSATION GROUP?
Conversation groups are designed to help non-native English speakers improve their conversational English, feel more confident speaking English, and build relationships with other intellectuals. It is not a formal English class--we do NOT teach grammar or written English.
HOW OFTEN DO GROUPS MEET?
Groups meet once per week for approximately four to six weeks.
DO YOU OFFER ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUPS DURING THE SUMMER?
Yes, we do. Currently we have two groups that are meeting this summer.
HOW MANY HOURS WILL A GROUP MEET PER WEEK?
Conversation groups meet for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours each week. Additional optional activities may also be offered.
WHY DO I NEED TO REGISTER TO BE IN A GROUP?
We anticipate having a long waiting list of students who would like to participate in a group. We take registration information so we can contact students who are in groups, as well as those on the waiting list. This also helps us get the highest number of students in groups each semester.
IF I AM IN A CONVERSATION GROUP, DO I NEED TO COME EACH WEEK?
We ask that each person commit to come to each meeting because we have many other students who are waiting to get into a group. However, if you miss one week, that is not a problem. Just let your group leader know that you will not attend that week. We understand that sometimes your schedule changes and you need to drop the group. If that happens, please just let your group leader know.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE IN A CONVERSATION GROUP?
Groups are open to all international students, scholars, and their spouses.
IS THERE A MINIMUM LEVEL ENGLISH REQUIREMENT?
If you are concerned about your English level, please contact us to discuss this further.
DO YOU OFFER ANY OTHER GROUPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?
Yes. We also offer discovery Bible studies for students who are interested in learning more about God and the Bible. If you are interested in being part of one of these groups, please contact us.
IF I AM MATCHED WITH AN AMERICAN FRIEND, HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET?
If you are matched with a student, the goal is once a week. If the volunteer is not a student, the goal will be once a month.
